D’un grand mal j’ai l’âme dolente,
J’erre sans conseil ni dessein,
Brûlé par une fièvre lente
Qui fait la figue au médecin.

Las! d’amour la fine sagette
A navré mon cœur langoureux,
Ce cœur que seule, ô ma Lucette,
Tu peux guérir si tu le veux.

Et Frère Jean l’a dit au prône:
Il n’est qu’un ladre et qu’un païen,
Celui qui refuse une aumône,
Quand pitoyable est le prochain.

Adonc, ouïs cette requête
Et vers moi vire tes doux yeux…
Car tu me peux seule, ô Lucette,
Bailler l’aumône que je veux !

Cet ennui qui tant me chagrine,
Ce mal qui tant me fait souffrir,
Pris sur ta lèvre purpurine
Un baiser le saurait guérir.

Ou de dépit je perds la  tête,
Ou plus qu’Anges je suis heureux.
Choisis et m’ouvre, ô ma Lucette,
Le Ciel, L’Enfer, ce que tu veux.

My soul is suffering from a great pain,
I drift without council or design,
burned by a slow fever
which makes a mockery of medicine.

Alas! Love’s slender dart has
pierced my languishing heart,
this heart which you alone,
O my Lucette, can choose to heal.

Did not Brother John preach from the pulpit:
“He who refuses to give alms
is but a miser and a heathen,
when another is in need.”

Therefore hear this petition
And turn your sweet eyes to me,
for you alone, O Lucette,
can give me the alms that I crave.

This plight which troubles me much,
this ache which pains me so,
a kiss stolen from your crimson lips
would suffice to heal.

Either I go mad from frustration,
or I am happier than the angels themselves.
Choose and show me the way, O my Lucette,
to Heaven or Hell, whichever is your will.
